The New Jersey Devils are just not having a good time currently. Even with the return of superstar Jack Hughes, the team is still struggling. Entering Tuesday, the Devils lost five of their last seven games. Because of this, they went from near the top of the Metropolitan Division to a free fall.

On Tuesday, things got even worse for the Devils, who were on the road to take on the rival New York Islanders. Instead of getting back in the win column or at minimum having a competitive game, they were outright embarrassed. The Devils lost 9-0 to the Islanders, and no, that's not a typo.

Devils fans who made the trip to Long Island were none too pleased by the effort they saw on the ice. During the blowout loss, one Devils fans decided to throw their own jersey onto the ice. That jersey happened to be No. 76 P.K.Subban jersey.

To make matters much more awkward, Subban was calling that game for ESPN!

P.K. Subban's hilarious reaction to Devils fan throwing his jersey during 9-0 blowout loss

"They must be watching the broadcast," Subban joked.

Credit where credit is due, Subban had a good sense of humor about the fan tossing the red, No. 76 jersey over the glass and onto the rink at UBS Center. Subban had only been with the Devils from 2019 until his retirement in 2022. That fan was absolutely fed up with the performance he saw from the Devils on Tuesday night.

The Islanders took a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period. Mat Barzal opened the scoring in a little over a minute of playing time. Anthony Duclair scored two goals in the first period and, less than four minutes into the second period, scored a hat-trick goal. From there, it just continued getting worse for the Devils. The Islanders scored one more goal in the second period and four more in the third,

Devils goalie Jacob Markstrom was on the ice for all nine goals allowed, recording just 15 saves on 24 shots faced. Just an abysmal performance overall, especially when compared to Ilya Sorokin, who stopped all 44 shots on goal by the Devils.

Maybe this game will serve as a wake-up call for the Devils, one that motivates them enough to get them back in the win column. Or maybe this is just who the Devils are this season, and their playoff hopes are truly done for.

The Devils have the chance to put this game behind them with a victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday. They will be on the road, but if they have a similar showing, could another Devils fan throw their jersey on the opponent's rink in disgust?
