Jimmy Dowd Jr., the son of original New Jersey Devils Stanley Cup champion Jim Dowd, has made the leap from the NCAA and joined the Devils organization on his first pro contract.
On Tuesday, it was announced that Dowd, 25, had joined the ECHL Adirondack Thunder on a one-year contract after attending the Devils' development camp earlier in the month.
The 5-foot-9 right-shot defenseman spent the previous five seasons with Penn State University, where he played in 150 games, recording 12 goals, 61 assists, and 73 points. Dowd just missed out on the chance to play alongside a potential generational talent in Gavin McKenna, but he's still played with some good players on his journey to the pros.jr
Before his Penn State days, Dowd played for the USHL's Chicago Steel, with whom he played alongside NHL talents like Mackie Samoskevich, Owen Power, Sam Colangelo, Ryan Ufko, Josiah Slavin, Jackson LaCombe, Robert Mastrosimone, Sean Farrell, Josh Doan, Matt Coronato, and Brendan Brisson.
Jimmy is the son of former Stanley Cup Champion and local New Jersey legend Jim Dowd. Jim Dowd hails from Brick, NJ and was just the second New Jersey high school player to ever make the NHL. It's even bett that he got to play a role in the first Stanley Cup coming to New Jersey in 1995.
Suffice to say, Dowd has held his own in the past and proven he belongs amongst those talented players, and he'll be looking to do more of the same as part of the Devils organization with the ECHL Thunder in 2025-26. He's a legacy for this franchise, and he hopes to one day bring a Stanley Cup to New Jersey just like his father.
