The opinions may have changed on the New Jersey Devils black alternate during the course of its existence. The “Jersey” jersey was introduced during the 2021-22 season. It came on the heels of the wildly popular Reverse Retro jersey. The mainly green jersey was one of the most widely sought after uniform options for fans. Some even spent hundreds of dollars to get official jerseys on the secondary market.

So, when rumors swirled that the Devils were going to announce a mainly black jersey with red accents the next season, fans were excited. Then, they saw the jersey. Most fans were not pleased with what they saw, wondering where the iconic Devils’ logo was and trying to figure out why their jersey said the word “Jersey” in script on the front.

Fans started to change their tune once they saw the players wearing it on the ice. It was a clean look for the players, although it never reached the popularity of the Reverse Retro jerseys or the Stadium Series jersey that was released in 2024.

In 2025-26, we will see the last of the “Jersey” jersey.

The Devils announced on Monday that this season will be the last we see of the black alternate jersey. They announced the dates when the alternates will be worn, starting with the November 24th game against the Detroit Red Wings. The Devils will retire the jersey on April 12th against the Ottawa Senators. They will wear the jersey a total of 11 times this season.

The “Jersey” jersey will always be a part of Devils history. We’ve seen some great games in the jersey, and we’ve seen some awful ones. Either way, it will be a part of Devils lore, and 10 years from now, when we see fans wear it in the Prudential Center, it will always be a talking point.
