Hockey fans have a lot of patience. We put up with 84-game seasons, a Gary Bettman press conference, and the occasional goalie interference review that takes longer than a Lord of the Rings film, but the Hometown Remix collection has found the limit.
The NHL and Fanatics rolled out the Hometown Remix jersey for all 32 teams, and the sticker shock hit fans hard. For the most part, Devils fans like the design and look of the jerseys. It was a black jersey with the design coming from their recent Stadium Series jersey, which sold out in minutes when it became available. Now, those jerseys sell for premium prices on the secondary market.
For the most recent launch by Fanatics, a premium jersey with custom lettering and numbering runs $275, and an authentic jersey, the kind players wear on the ice, runs $500. Five hundred dollars. For a jersey the team will wear in 10 games this season. And we learned that the Devils will only be wearing the jerseys this season. At least, that's the plan right now.
The Hometown Remix jerseys are pricing out regular Devils fans
Are you trying to buy jerseys for your children, which will likely grow out of them before Christmas or Hannukah? That's still crazy. Youth player jerseys start at $169.99, and the plain youth version is $139.99.
Fine, skip the jersey and go for the hoodie. Surely that’s the budget option? Not exactly. The hoodies range in price from $60 for kids and more than $115 for the lace-up hoodie for adults.
And it doesn't matter. Most of the great stuff is sold out. The most popular piece was a Starter Jacket-style zip-up that was sold out within minutes.

We get it from Fanatics point of view. We live in a capitalistic society where the point of these types of roll outs are to make as much money as possible.
The frustrating part is that the league keeps saying it wants to grow the game and bring in younger fans. The families who fill the arena are the ones doing the math at the register. Meanwhile, the NHL and Fanatics say they’ll evaluate fan response to decide on future programs.
Hopefully, the Devils spend a lot of time and effort doing giveaways for families in the stadium. There are usually prize packages being given to fans for different things to enhance the experience. If we can get more kids to have this merch, then mission accomplished. All us adults can sit here and live with our FOMO.
