Mikhail Yegorov was in net for Boston University as they attempted to win a National Championship. Unfortunately, it didn't go as planned for the New Jersey Devils prospect.

Back in January, the Boston University Terriers made a decision that would change the prospects of their season. Mikhail Yegorov was preparing to join BU in the fall for his 2025-26 season. In the meantime, he was being peppered on a nightly basis while playing for the Omaha Lancers of the USHL. The Terriers goalies were not playing well, and they were losing their grip on an NCAA tournament spot.

Boston University announced that Yegorov would enroll in school early and join the hockey team immediately. It paid immediate dividends, as Yegorov was clearly the best goalie on the roster. Honestly, he quickly became one of the best goalies in the NCAA. He helped Boston University take down Boston College, the top team in college hockey at the time, to win the coveted Beanpot.

He wasn't done with the accolades. Yegorov's heroics not only got BU back on track and into the NCAA Tournament, but he carried them to the Frozen Four. He first took on Ohio State, and he told them to be happy with their football championship, helping Boston beat them 8-3. Cornell upset the second-seeded Michigan State team, so BU got an easier matchup in round two. Yegorov only allowed two goals, and they won 3-2.

In the Frozen Four, Yegorov held the Penn State Nittany Lions to just one goal in the semi-finals. That sent BU to the championship game, hoping to extend what's a dream season. They haven't won an NCAA championship since 2009 and just the one in the past 30 years.

Mikhail Yegorov couldn't keep the magic against Western Michigan in NCAA Championship

Unfortunately, Yegorov's streak of a higher than .915 save percentage in every NCAA tournament game ended on Saturday night. He kept his team in the game on Saturday night, taking just a 3-2 deficit into the final period, but the wheels fell off in the third.

Yegorov ended up allowing five goals on 27 shots. That's an awful statline, and it will probably put his entire season in a strange light, but he was really asked to do too much.

The hope is BU uses this run to the championship to really hit the transfer portal hard. They have the makings of a really good team, but they need more defense. They will also lose a few players, including likely losing fellow Devils prospect Shane Lachance. Adding help on defense could not only help BU win a future championship, but it could really help Yegorov's development curve.
