Sebastian Aho: 5 years, $8.48 million AAV

If the Devils want to go for a little more of an expensive option, then the Devils could look at the Carolina Hurricanes. They have two very interesting contracts here. One is for Andrei Svechnikov, who signed an eight-year deal worth $62 million this offseason. The other is Sebastian Aho. This is where things get a little expensive.

Aho signed an offer sheet by the Montreal Canadiens and it was matched by the Hurricanes. It pays him $8.454 million over five seasons. It was something the Hurricanes usually don’t do with their money, but things seem to be changing there.

This deal would obviously get Hughes to unrestricted free agency a lot faster. The Devils might not want that, but the Hughes representatives might push for that. He has to get through seven NHL seasons to get to unrestricted free agency. That would be four years after next season, which is the last Hughes will play under his entry-level contract.

If the Devils give him a five-year deal, it would only pay for one year of his unrestricted free agency. That’s not a lot, and giving him north of $8 million when he hasn’t proven that much in the NHL would definitely be something. Hughes might need to prove a little more before he is able to command a deal like this.
