During the 2025-2026 NHL season, rumors about a shattered relationship between defenseman Dougie Hamilton and the New Jersey Devils gained heavy traction. After the trade deadline passed and Hamilton remained in Newark, the drama leaked into the early stages of the offseason. Now, in late July, it seems that Hamilton will remain with the Devils to start the 2026-27 season, pending a deal the Devils can't refuse.
The Devils found themselves with a positional logjam on the blueline, with a mix of young budding stars and veteran presence; everyone knew the team was going to move some of their defensive capital to acquire other assets. In a shocking move by newly hired Sunny Mehta, his first major transaction with the franchise was sending away Simon Nemec and Maxim Tsyplakov to Calgary in exchange for draft picks. The second overall pick of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft was a fan favorite, but since Nemec was moved to southern Alberta, all signs are pointing to Mehta putting his faith in Hamilton.
Both right-handed offensive defensemen, Hamilton and Nemec had similar roles on the team. The only difference between the two was their age, with Hamilton being 33 and Nemec being 22.

The Devils have been considered one of the league's up-and-coming young teams for a while now, but the disappointment of this past season shows they are transitioning into a "win now" situation with a small window to make a run for the Stanley Cup. If this Devils team doesn't become a contender soon, they may slip back into obscurity, and fans will be looking at another rebuild before they know it.
With the move of Nemec, fans can conclude that Mehta recognizes this and feels a defenseman like Hamilton is exactly the kind of weapon New Jersey needs at this point, a view former Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald was straying away from at the end of his tenure.
It may be redundant to say, but the offseason is not over yet. There are still a lot of players in the market, such as Connor Hellebuyck and Kirill Marchenko, who have been linked to the Devils in trade rumors (though Hellebuyck is becoming further and further from possible).
Hamilton could be traded if the right opportunity arises, but for now, all indications point to the Devils keeping their number one D-man for the upcoming season. With the addition of new players to support the offense, plus a new general manager who believes in him, Hamilton could view this season as a fresh start and can play his game on the ice without outside drama.
