Mid-round Draft Picks

As we always do, let’s start with the obvious. The Devils will obviously start any conversation with a 1st-round pick. After the team threatens to hang up the phone, a realistic conversation will begin. That likely comes down to a 2nd-round pick if the Devils are lucky, or a 3rd-round pick if the Devils aren’t. Anything less when talking about ONLY a draft pick is probably not even worth the trade.

The Devils already have three 4th-round picks this season from previous trades. They still own all of their own picks outside of this year’s 5th-round pick, but they own Columbus’s in the Keith Kinkaid trade.

The Devils are likely going to end up with some kind of draft pick compensation in this deal. They have to wait until some of the other right-handed defensemen get dealt before the deadline. Teams are looking to make deals for the Dallas Stars’ John Klingberg. Others might surprisingly be on the list, but after the Klingberg deal goes down, the Devils can make a move with Subban.

Just one draft pick would sting, as it doesn’t really get the Devils much to help them now, but getting a second 2nd-round pick would really help in an interesting NHL Draft.
